Message from the President

Welcome to Canterbury Baseball,

Since 2004, Baseball has been in Canterbury in some form or another, starting as the Canterbury Baseball Club. It has since become a fully-fledged sport in Canterbury with four senior teams and a number of junior teams. The association was founded in 2013 as a result of this expansion and we now have around twelve volunteer board members.

I was elected president in 2014 with an aim to foster and develop the large interest in the game within our region. Our four current clubs - Astros, Cardinals, Chichi and Vipers - play in our senior competition (16 years +) and a junior competition (ages 9-13) called ‘The Waitaha’, which also includes the Linwood Giants and Heathcote Red Devils. The latter two teams are affiliated with their parent club the Cardinals. After the Christmas period we developed a new competition for 13-16 year age group which was a great success and will now run annually. At the moment, the juniors play on a Monday night and the seniors on a Sunday.

From all the Canterbury clubs, we select a Canterbury All-Star team at both junior and senior level. These players will then represent the Canterbury region at any New Zealand national competition within their age group. Any senior player can be selected to play for the Canterbury Redbacks, which is the national side within Canterbury region. Any senior players who are not selected for the Redbacks can be selected for Canterbury A.

As a board we work closely with Baseball New Zealand and have the collective goal of growing this great game in the New Zealand market. We see a great sporting and professional pathway for our young people through baseball.
